Safe Food Victoria regulates Victoria’s food system to make sure public health is protected, and businesses are supported to grow.
Safe Food Victoria is a statutory authority of the Victorian Government.
What we do
Safe Food Victoria regulates Victoria’s food laws under the Dairy and Food Innovation Act 2000, Meat Industry Act 1993, Seafood Safety Act 2003, and parts of the Food Act 1984.
Safe Food Victoria:
- Reviews and decides on food business licence applications
- Helps people and businesses understand and follow food safety laws and regulations
- Investigates and responds to food safety incidents and breaches of the law
- Enforces rules that reduce food safety harm
- Promotes a safe food culture in Victoria.
Our structure
Mike Gooey is the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Safe Food Victoria. Mike brings over 20 years of experience across agriculture and regional development, including strong expertise in food safety, regulation and economic development.
We deliver our work in two divisions:
Food safety integrity and response directorate - led by Allison McNamara, (Director, Food safety integrity and response).
Food regulation and corporate services directorate - led by Andrew Chen (Director, Food regulation and corporate services).

Victorian food safety legislation
Safe Food Victoria is established under the Safe Food Victoria Act 2026. The agency is also responsible for the delivery of functions under the Meat Industry Act 1993, Seafood Safety Act 2003, Dairy and Food Innovation Act 2000, and Food Act 1984, and associated regulations made under these Acts.
