Who this licence suits?
What you can do
An abattoir licence lets you slaughter consumable animals for human consumption. With this licence, you can operate the following if all the meat and by-products come from your abattoir:
- further meat processing facility
- retail butcher shop
- prime tallow processing facility
- inedible rendering facility.
What you cannot do
You cannot:
- slaughter poultry - you need a poultry processing facility licence
- slaughter game - you need a game meat processing licences
- slaughter consumable animals to sell their meat for pet food - you need a pet meat processing facility licence).
- slaughter consumable animals on a farm and eat the meat yourself (you do not need a Safe Food Victoria licence to do this)
- transport meat or seafood - you need a meat transport vehicle licence.
