What you can do with your Retail Butcher Shop licence
Get a Retail Butcher Shop licence to:
- sell meat from a retail shop
- sell less than 50 tonnes of meat through wholesale sales each year from a retail shop
- process and store meat mainly for retail sale.
What you can’t do with your Retail Butcher Shop licence
You cannot:
- slaughter animals (get an Abattoir licence).
- slaughter poultry (get a Poultry Processing Facility licence).
- wholesale more than 50 tonnes of meat each year (get a Further Meat Processing Facility licence).
- sell pet food (get a Pet Food Establishment licence).
- transport meat or seafood (get a Meat Transport Vehicle licence).

What you can do
A Retail Butcher Shop licence lets you sell and prepare meat for customers from a shop. With this licence, you can:
- Sell meat directly to customers from your shop
- Sell meat wholesale, up to 50 tonnes per year.
- Prepare, process and store meat, as long as it is mainly for retail sale
You cannot:
- Slaughter animals - you need an Abattoir licence.
- Slaughter poultry - you need a Poultry Processing Facility licence.
- Wholesale more than 50 tonnes of meat per year - you need a Further Meat Processing Facility licence.
- Sell pet food - you need a Pet Food Establishment licence.
- Transport meat or seafood - you need a Meat Transport Vehicle licence.
